Moodle Quiz Activity with 500 Concurrent User

We have experienced a Quiz Activity with 500 concurrent user and i want share this experience with you. Because these insights are really valuable for system administrators, that i could not find any suggestion before this Quiz Activity.  Let me write the details about the system and the quiz activity.
We have installed moodle on a virtual machine VMWare with the following configuration.

We set the vm cpu to 16 shared vcpu,  and 24GB shared RAM
Running Centos 7.0 Minimal with php5.X, apache and mariadb with 700 max_connection setting.
Quiz activity with 20 Question and 30 Minute timespan and 17 Minute attempt time limit. 2 Question per page. Question order and choices were shuffled. Auto submit open attempt setting was on.

CPU and RAM usage was crucial for us. We see maximum 12 GB ram usage which is roughly 1 GB per 50 User
We see %95 CPU usage when the quiz started.

Before quiz started i stopped cron jobs and automated course backups.

Email to user when a role is assigned

When an admin/teacher assigns a role to a user in course or category context you can send an email to the user which the role has been assigned by modifying the following moodle lib file.

/var/www/html/moodle/admin/roles/assign.php

In the file around the lines 103-111 by adding email_to_user() moodle lib function you can send the email to the user from the moodle support user. Be careful that email_to_user() function accepts from and to users as moodle user objects so you can not write simply emails and send.

After you add this the user will receive an email with subject "Your role has been assigned in Moodle" and message ie. "You have been assigned as a Course creator in the Category: Mathematics"

Moodle Adding Event Monitor Rules in Bulk to all of the Courses

Event Monitor Rules feature is a new and a missing feature which has arrived to moodle in version 2.8. This feature help students to be informed by email if a course material added updated or deleted etc. So they do not need to login to check whether a content has been added to the course or not. It also informs teachers and admins about  a specific event occurred (a course has been added, a content has been viewed etc.).

But if you are administering a moodle with 150+ courses it is real heavy duty task to add rules one by one to every course created in moodle.

So with the following php code you can add a rule to the every course created in moodle.

By changing the $type variable you can add any kind of event rules to the moodle.

BIGBLUEBUTTON (Sanal Sınıf ve Konferans Sistemi )+Moodle

Big Blue Button(BBB) çoklu Video, Ses, Sunum, Masaüstü paylaşımı ve Chat yetenekleri olan uzaktan eğitim için ideal hizli bir çözüm. Red5, Apache Tomcat, Asterisk, nginx,swf2tools bileşenlerinden oluşan istenirse online hizmet olarak almak mümkün istenirse ubuntu bir sunucuya bir kaç bash komutuyla kurulabilen hali hazirda sanal makina olarak da indirilebilen kurulumda sorun yaşamayacağınız bir sistem. Öne çıkan özellikleri

• Kişiler sisteme mikrofon kamera veya chat sistemiyle dahil olabilirler
• Moderator, pdf word ya da ppt formatindaki dosyalari upload ederek bunlari bir pencereden diger katilanlarla eşzamanlı(senkron bir sekilde sunmasına olanak sağlıyor. Arka planda swftools ile upload edilen dokumanlar flash formatina cevrilip sistemin arayüzüne aktariliyor.
• Moderator kendi makinasindaki masaüstünü diğer katılanlarla paylaşma imkanı buluyor.
• Moderator katılımcıların sesini teker teker veya bütün olarak açıp kapatabiliyor.
• Moodle ile çok güzel bir şekilde entegre olabiliyor. Boylelikle moodle da activity ekleyerek ogrencilerin otomatik olarak BBB sistemine girmesi saglanabiliyor.

KURULUMU basit demiştim işte adımları

Kurulu bir ubuntunuz var ise aşağıdaki komutlarla kurulum bitiyor

Kurulurken sizden mysql root şifresini isteyecektir. Bir de telefon kodu 90 i
girmenizi isteyecektir hepsi bu kadar bunlari girdikten sonra sisteminiz kurulacaktir.

Dikkat etmeniz gereken bir hussus var eğer makinaniz üzerinde 80. portta çalışan bir uygulama varsa
örneğin apache ya bunun portunu değiştirin ya durdurun ya da sistem kurulduktan sonra
nginx sunucusunun portunu değiştirin. Çünkü nginx varsayılan kurulumda 80. portu kullaniyor


Yeni versiyonda masaüstü paylaşımını kurulum scriptinden çıkartmışlar GPL lisans mevzularından
dolayı. Bunu ayri olarak kuruyoruz ama üzülmeyin bu da tek satır

apt-get install bbb-apps-deskshare

dedikten sonra masaüstü paylaşımını da kurmuş oluyoruz.


Herşeyin güzel bir şekilde kurulduğunda emin olmak istiyorsaniz komut satırında

bbb-conf --check

komutunu yazıyorsunuz ve size aşağıdaki gibi bir çıktı vermesi gerekiyor

Moodle plugin indirme bolumunden BBB pluginini indirip kurun daha sonra mooodle sisteminize
admin kullanicisi ile girdikten sonra

Modules->Activities->BigBlueButton bolumune gecin orda sizden bbb sunucunuzun ipsi
güvenlik tuzunu:)(security salt) ve de baglanilacak oda sayisini belirten meetingidyi isteyecek

Daha sonra ders içinde turn editing on dedikten sonra add an activity den bigbluebutton u seçip
bilgileri girdikten sonra aktivitenizi oluşturabilirsiniz.

Acık Kaynak Kodlu e-Ogrenme Sistemi (Moodle)

Moodle ücretli muadillerine(BlackboardCT) oranla cok esnek bir yapıya sahip modüler php tabanli bir e-öğrenme uygulamasıdır. Bu sistemde kişiler rollerine göre haklara sahipler. Bu roller kişiye sistem yöneticisi tarafında manual olarak ya da seçilen yetkilendirme(authentication) modülüne göre (Ornegin LDAP) otomatik olarak verilmektedir. Roller ise hak etki alanlarinin genişliğine göre yukaridan aşağıya Administrator->Course Creator->Teacher->Non-Editing Teacher->Student->Guest->Authenticated User diye öntanımlı olarak sıralanmaktadır. Bu rol ve haklari yönetici kendi istegine göre degistirebilmekte ve yeni roller tanımlıyabilmektedir. Sistemin kurulumu bittikten sonra sistemin ayağa kaldırılması için kullanıcılara ve içeriklere ihtiyaç vardır. Kullanıcılar kendilerini sisteme email-kayıt yöntemi ile kaydettirebildikleri gibi önceden yönetici tarafından oluşturulabilir. Ya da başka bir uygulama için hali hazırda bir veritabanimiz varsa tekrardan aynı kullanıcılar oluşturmak yerine o veritabanını kullanarak yetkilendirme yapılabilir. Bunun için Sistem yöneticisi ilgili yetkilendirme(authentication) modülünü seçip aktif ettikten sonra ayarlarini yapmasi gerekmektedir. Moodle içeriklerine gelince course creatorlar dersleri actiktan sonra ister herhangi bir kullanıcıya teacher rolü atayarak isterse de kendisi dersin içeriğini oluşturabilir. Moodle sistemi internette görebildiğiniz bütün text-audio-video içerikleri desteklemektedir. Bu demek oluyorki youtube veya herhangi bir video sitesinde gördügünüz herhangi bir videoyu ders iceriginize gömebilirsiniz. Ogrenciler derslere kayıt için derse tiklamasi eger dersin oluşturucusu şifre koymuşsa şifresini girmesi yeterli olmaktadır. Daha sonra öğrenciler ders içeriklerini görüp gerekli aktiviteleri gerçekleştirebilmektedir. Moodle sistemin eklentileri arasında öğrenci notlandırma, ödev verme, gibi eklentiler ders verenin yükünü bir hayli azaltmaktadır. Aktiviteler arasında anket düzenleme, forum, quiz, online video-ses destekli ders uygulamaları bulunmaktadır.
